Jewel's coupon policy and Avenu policy

Jewel-Osco Coupon Policy

Thank for contacting us regarding our coupon policy. We appreciate the opportunity to assist you.
The Jewel-Osco Corporate policy states the following:

Jewel - Manufacturer Coupons
Manufacturer Coupons: Coupons issued by the manufacturer containing terms of agreement will be redeemed for the face value, following purchase requirements on or before the expiration date.

Jewel-Osco may issue coupons that are manufacturer coupons that contain the words redeemable only at Jewel-Osco.

Jewel - Store Coupons
Store Coupons: Companys discount offers in various forms of media including, but not limited to, print, electronic, newspaper, direct mailers, kiosks and Company websites.

Store coupons may also contain the words redeemable only at Jewel-Osco.

Store coupons may state that the discount applies only with Preferred Card.

When redeeming a store coupon the terms printed on the coupon must be adhered to.

Expired store coupons will not be accepted.

Jewel - Catalina Checkout Coupons / Rebates
Catalina Checkout Coupons/Rebates: Catalina is a third party vendor that partners with vendors and Jewel-Osco to offer both manufacturer coupons and Jewel-Osco in-store coupons. The coupons are triggered by purchasing qualified items at checkout which generate a coupon to print on the Catalina printer.

It is Jewel-Oscos policy that these coupons are to be used in a future purchase, not within the purchase in which they are generated.

Catalina coupons can only be given to the customer for whom they were intended (not to any other customer or associate). If a customer does not want their Catalina coupons, it is Jewel-Oscos policy that the cashier destroys them immediately.

Catalina may be contacted at 1-888-826-8766 for any questions about redemption and\or if a coupon fails to print within a transaction.

We will NOT accept competitor Catalina coupons.

Jewel - Internet Coupons
Internet Coupons: Coupons printed from an internet website presented for redemption with a qualifying purchase.

Jewel-Osco DOES NOT accept internet coupons containing the following conditions:

a. Free product offers that do not require a purchase

b. Redemption value exceeding $5.00

c. Absence of UPC bar code

d. Photocopied internet coupons. Most internet sites will print a time and date stamp on the coupons, and limit each ISP address to two coupons total. If multiple coupons have the same time and date stamp this could be an indicator the coupon was
photocopied, and should not be accepted.

Jewel - Competitor 'Own Brand' Coupons
Competitor Own Brand Coupons: are other retailers company discount offers.

Jewel-Osco will redeem competitor Own Brand coupons on comparable (size) Jewel-Osco Own Brand merchandise purchased at the face value of the coupon within the valid dates of that coupon. (I.e. $.50 coupon for Dominicks brand 16 oz loaf of bread may be redeemed when a 16oz loaf of Jewel bread is purchased.)

Competitor Own Brand coupons may not be doubled or tripled and may not be used with a Jewel store coupon.

Customers may choose between offers (Jewel or Competitors Own Brand) to receive the best price as long as the value of the product is not exceeded.

It is Jewels policy for cashiers to abide by the competitor Own Brand coupon rules. Competitors store coupons for National Brand items are NOT redeemable at Jewel. (I.e. $1.00 off Kraft Cheese).

Jewel - Competitor Coupons
The Midwest Division competitor coupon acceptance policy varies by area, district, and store. Individual Store Directors have the discretion to accept or decline these coupons on a competitive basis.

If a customer calls, e-mails, or submits a Comment Card requesting information regarding the competitor coupon acceptance policy for a particular Midwest Division store, you must contact the store directly and request their policy. DO NOT refer to the customer back to the store. It is the responsibility of the CIC to gather this information on behalf of the customer.

Jewel - Expired Coupons
Beginning May 01, 2009, Jewel-Osco will no longer accept Expired Coupons. This will keep us in compliance with the redemption guidelines set by Coupon Manufacturers.

Coupons Definition:

Coupons are a form of tender presented by the customer to reduce their order total based on merchandise purchased in stores where the retailer has agreed to accept manufacturer coupons.

Retailers are not required by law to accept manufacturers coupon.

Response (Anna S.)

Thank you for contacting Jewel-Osco Customer Care. We received your email regarding the Policy for the Avenu Savings Program.

We appreciate you taking the time to contact us. The rules for this program are provided below.

The customer must have a Preferred Savings Card. If customers don’t have a Preferred Savings Card, they can fill out an application.

Discounts are offered to the customer based on past purchases.

For example, a customer who always purchases a certain brand of laundry detergent might get a special offer on that brand.

Customer's must use the same preferred card at the kiosk and at checkout.

These discounts are in addition to the loyalty-card price for the products.

New Preferred Savings Card shoppers without a purchase history will receive offers targeted to a broad audience.

Discounts will be given automatically when the discounted item is scanned by the cashier or by the customer at the self-checkout. No coupon or special code is necessary.

Avenu offers are handled like any other coupon.

Again, thank you for contacting Jewel-Osco Customer Care. If we can provide any information or be of service to you in the future, please do not hesitate to contact us by e-mail or by calling 1-877-932-7948.

Good for Jewel!

"Catalina may be contacted at 1-888-826-8766 for any questions about redemption and\or if a coupon fails to print within a transaction."

I hope they follow this! I am sure Jewel looses a rediculous amount of money with some of these deals when the coupons aren't printing properly. (Some) Employees are all too willing to hand out $10 or $15 cash right out of the drawer! Or a gift card. I know it will be an inconvenience for the shopper who didn't receive the cat, but I would rather that than the store discontinuing the catalina sales all together!!!!

Can you confirm...

Jill can you confirm that...

"We will NOT accept competitor Catalina coupons."

...means that Jewel will no longer take Walgreens RR, etc?

I used a RR this week, and the manager approved its use saying "it's a manufacturer's coupon", but if it's against Jewel's policy, I don't want to do it anymore.

Most likely

I don't know for sure on that - I asked my local store and they thought it referred to STORE Catalinas, not Manufacturer (and indeed I used some Dominick's manufacturer Catalinas to pay for my groceries this week) so I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

for now

My store still taking them for now.........

Jewel customer service said no competitor Cats accepted.

Did the $25 Kraft & Jewel $7 ham deal with the $30 purchase. Had 1 Cat. from Jewel, & 4 Wags Mfg. RR's. Cashier told me I could only use 1 RR or Cat per transaction. Went to another Jewel & they accepted 2 - Wags RR's on my transaction with no problem. Called Jewel Customer Service, & was told that as of 4-7-09, they do Not accept competitors Cat. type coupons. I was still shaking, as such a mess with the cashier backing out all the Wags RR's I had used, & a major back up at the self checkout, due to my problems. I only used the self check out because they were all empty & the cashier lines were all long. Forgot to ask about using more than 1 Jewel Cat at a time. Perhaps someone else can advise me. I would hate to think that I must break up my purchases so that I can use only 1 Cat at a time. The only reason I use the Wags RR's at Jewel is because Wags will only take 1 at a time, & if I accumulate a few, while waiting for a good deal, it's hard to use them. As usual though, the cashier & customer service rep were both very nice.

What an awful shopping day so far...

I went to my preferred Jewel this morning & they had no Wesson oil & no regular Pam. Ok, I'll go to a different one. I go to the one in North Riverside, find what I want, and go to self-checkout. I scan my coupons & they need approval. The lady comes over & gets my coupons out of the machine & promptly hands me the one that says "$2 OYNO" with a Dominick's logo on it (it does say manufacturer coupon on it.), and says "we don't take Dominick's coupons". I ask "you don't take competitor coupons? Because your coupon policy says you do." She asks another lady (manager?) and that lady also says no, we don't take them. I tell her ok, just let me have my coupons back. She hands me just the Dominick's one. I said, no, I'd like all of my coupons back--I don't want to purchase anything. She gives them all back and I leave.

I call corporate when I get home (the 877 number on their website) and the guy on the phone says it's up to each individual store whether or not they will take competitor coupons. He offers to call the store in question to see if they will take it and I tell him that I have no intention of going back to that store, especially since my preferred Jewel WILL take them, and not to bother. I made it clear to him (politely) that I will not set foot in that store again and he didn't even remotely act like he cared--maybe because he knew I would shop at another Jewel?? I don't know. So instead, I call the local number here in this thread & got some lady's voice mail. I hit 0 to talk to an operator who procedes to tell me that Jewel hasn't taken competitor manufacturer coupons in 3 years. If I was able to use them, then I had a cashier who was unaware of the policy. What??? I've had managers check me out who have taken these coupons! She asks if I would still like to speak with a customer service rep about it, I say yes. She transfers me & I got someone's voice mail. I left a message and am waiting for her call back but as of right now, I am really disappointed about this.

(And this was on top of 2 bad Wags experiences today... maybe someone is telling me not to shop today!)

**Update** Nancy from corporate (at the local number) told me that it is absolutely their policy to take competitor's manufacturer's coupons (which we all knew). She said she will call the North Riverside store to remind them. I guess I will have to start carrying their policy with me now!

Hey Newbie

I've had to 'whip it out" so many times recently, I was thinking of having T-shirts printed with the Jewel Coupon Policy...front & back, so that way I could just point to my chest, or spin around for section 4 & 5...what do you all think?

LMAO

GREAT idea! We could do it with all the stores that have official policies! :)

ROFLMAO

I'd have to wear several shirts on those days I visit more than one store. Just put on my last stop first, 2nd to last stop 2nd, and so on until I had them on in the order I was stopping. Then as I reach each store, just slip off the one on top. Teehee. Geez, better keep good track of that last store and not add one at the last minute or I'll end up with no q policy or shirt! ;-)

be careful of store policies

I do believe they all have the "NO SHOES, NO SHIRT, NO SERVICE" Policy at all our stores!

You never know though..

she may get away with her coupon usage with no shirt! ;) LOL I was thinking the same thing, prea--peeling off layers of shirts! Or, go with x number of friends, each wearing a different shirt!

LOL

I'll take one too. Maybe we can get a discount for a large order. We can give them out at the picnic. :-)

Would Jewel accept man. coupon issued from another store?

I was at my local Jewel (Crystal Lake) and had a coupon (is it still called a Catalina if it prints out from the Catalina machine but is for a specific product?) that I had received from Walgreen's ($1 off Quaker Oats) but said "manufacturer coupon" on it. "Walgreens" was written in red on the coupon, but it didn't say, "redeemable only at Walgreens." I asked the Jewel cashier if I could use the coupon and she checked with someone else and came back and said, "no." I pointed out that it said "manufacturer coupon" on it and it didn't say, "redeemable only at Walgreens" but the cashier still said that she couldn't take it. After reading this section (I just love your blog Jill!!) and Jewel's coupon policy, I believe my coupon should have been accepted. Can someone please confirm that I am reading and understanding this correctly? Thank you so much!

CL Jewel finally will accept my Wags catalina

After reading comments on this blog and reading Jewel's coupon policy, I returned to my local (Crystal Lake) Jewel. I spoke with a woman at the service desk who insisted that Jewel will not accept my catalina from Walgreens. I showed her the printout I had of Jewel's coupon policy, and she still refused. She said stores "may" accept them, but don't have to. I was very polite but stood firm. She was snide and rude ("I've worked here 20 years and we've never accepted them." And when I said Jewel would be reimbursed because it's a manufacturer's coupon, she said, "How do you know how it works?"). I ended up asking her to please contact corporate. She took my name and phone number and left a message on my answering machine shortly after I left Jewel. Her message said Jewel will accept manufacturer's coupons that print out from another store as long as there is the address where to send it. She never apologized nor even came remotely close to it. I'll "kill her with kindness" next time I see her at the store and will thank her for following up on the issue. I don't want to cheat the store, but want to be able to use coupons legitimately.

Wags cats at Jewel

I am a little confused. I can't believe all these employees are so poorly trained and I am glad you got your point across to them. However, are you not shopping at Wags anymore? Why didn't you just spend it there?
I was at Jewel a few days ago and a woman was returning a bunch of the wrong kinds of Pillsbury biscuits she had bought b/c it didn't get her a cat. The lady behind the counter was all but swearing when the woman walked away something about all these "darn coupon programs these people are on" creating all this extra work not buying the right things. Since it was none of my business I didn't, but I wanted to explain that most people I know wouldn't even shop at Jewel if it weren't for Jill, so be happy you have a job and if customer service was never needed she would be out of one. But I can see where older employees not used to all this commotion have a bad attitude about it. Then it's my turn and I had to return bad meat and she never did snap out of it, but I got my exchange. I bet she went home feeling the same way as when I left. It's a shame b/c some employees don't understand that it's NOT a scam and it's not ripping Jewel off. It's also a shame b/c it stops me from trying different products to see if they work. I just buy what's already been posted b/c I don't want to make the lady behind the counter have a bad day. Ugh.

You're Right

You are right. I can't tell you how many times I have used a Walgreen's Cat over at Jewel. They scan just fine. If you're not carrying a copy of the Jewel coupon policy, you might want to consider printing it out and keeping it handy when you shop. I do. It's available under Jill's link: Shop Smarter - Coupon Policies

Wags Register Rewards at Jewel

I've also been denied usage of RRs (at Jewel) on several occasions. I must say that carrying the coupon policy has made a difference. Remember the day the HC soup deal STOPPED working? I purchased 10 Healthy Choice soup, no cat, so went to Customer Service, the lady was very nice, checked the paper (no ad). I asked if I could just return them, (I used blinkies) so she went to the cashier to retrieve them, (I told her that wasn't necessary) and saw that I had used Wags RRs and scolded the young male cashier in front of his customer for accepting them, and told him he better "pay more attention". I felt so bad for him.
She came back over to the service desk and I kind of whispered, I heard what you said to the cashier, did he do something wrong? And she replied "those coupons are from Walgreens, and we can't take them". I told her "sure you can, it's right in your policy, and I just happen to have a copy". I handed it to her pointing to section 3, and she says to the other CSR "hey this is what we were looking for last week!" (honest!) Then the other one comes out and apologizes to me for last week (denied my JV $5.00 coupon, saying they can't take IPs for $5.00, and couldn't find a copy of the policy). So they asked if they could make a copy (honest!) and I said of course!

Thank you!

Thank you Prea and Pinkheart. I printed out the policy and will have it with me in the future!

So Jewel accepts competitor's store coupons...

but will they stack them with manufacturer coupons? I read the policy you have listed and it only says that they can't be used with Jewel coupons. Did I misread it? Or is there not a clear answer to this in the policy? Do you happen to know from experience, Jill? Thanks so much for your reply!

Printed coupons from the internet @ Jewel

I went shopping yesterday at a SW side Jewel and had a mix of both "newspaper" coupons and coupons that I had printed out (including AVENU !) Well, the printed coupons were rejected outright and THEN, the coupons I had for soda were refused because they said it store policy to NOT accept them. They had to check with a manager about all this and thankfully it was 6AM and I wasn't the jerk holding up a line for 10 minutes. This is mind boggling. They said people counterfeit coupons, which I am aware of, but to counterfeit a coupon for 55 cents off for paper towels??What?!? This is crazy. If stores are going to individually reject certain coupons, why even bother clipping?

coupon policy

Jewel's corporate policy is absolutely to accept internet coupons - print out a copy from the link above and carry it with you. I cover a lot of this in my coupon class (what to do when the cashier tells you something that differs from the store policy) and unfortunately it does happen, seemingly with increasing frequency.

Jewel has a book at the service counter that contains all known counterfeit internet coupons. If there is any question on a printable coupon's authenticity, the cashiers are supposed to check it against the book.) The cashiers are hoping you won't argue with them and that you'll basically move on and agree to what they tell you. As shoppers, we sometimes find ourselves in a position where we know the store's policy better than some of the cashiers do.

So what could you have done? Without a copy of their policy with you (and sadly, as this kind of thing increases, carrying one with you starts to seem more and more a good idea) you could have asked the store to show you their coupon policy - which they have at the service counter, and again absolutely accepts internet coupons.

As far as Avenu, you don't have to print those or even show that to the cashier at all -- once you look at it in the browser, the coupons are "loaded" to your Preferred card and they come off automatically when the card is scanned.

I would call Jewel's corporate office (630-948-6268) and tell them what happened to you. It's the only way that corporate knows what's going on in the stores. Keep in mind that in addition to Avenu, JewelOsco.com also has printable internet coupons on their own website too. This is another argument you can use in the stores - why would they put printables on their own website if you could not use them in the store?

Overage ?

I just went to Jewel to purchase the progresso soup. I used the $1.10 off coupon and I was told they had to override the value to a $1.00 as it is on sale for a dollar. I mentioned to them that I s/b able to use the overage toward the rest of my purchase & they said that is not allowed. I read Jewels policy & I dont see where it addresses this issue. This time around overage was only .20, but for future reference I'm not sure how to approach this issue w/the cashier. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Strange

Your cashier did this before they scanned the coupon? I just came from Jewel about an hour ago and used them without a problem - their registers definitely allow overage. And, when they turn that coupon in for redemption, they will get the full $1.10 value returned to them.

I've been using coupons with overage at Jewel regularly (weekly) for over two years now, and you're correct, their policy does not address overages as some others do (Target's, for example, states that they do reserve the right to key down overage coupons if they don't scan.)

I'm guessing you just had a cashier who noticed your coupon exceeded the value of the soup and "decided" to do something about it. Overage is a privilege, not a right... and sometimes it doesn't work out. But if they had simply scanned the coupon, you would have been fine.

$4.50 Gallon of Milk Coupon (Catalina)

Shopped at Jewel today, specifically to buy a gallon of milk ($1.99) and use my $4.50 off milk catalina coupon. Knowing that Jewel will not give cash back for overage, I bought pie crusts too. Anyway, the cashier looked at the coupon, walked over to the manager and came back to write "$1.99" on the catalina. I thought the value of the coupon was for $4.50? I mentioned this and the cashier said "No. Milk is on sale this week for $1.99, so that's the value of this coupon". I cancelled the use of the catalina and bought the milk without, as I didn't want to waste what (I think) is a $4.50 value. So, I called Jewel's Customer Care # and the rep confirmed that the cashier was correct on her actions. Whatever the price of milk is, at the time of catalina redemption, is the value of the catalina. I'm puzzled! The catalina doesn't say "up to $4.50" it says "Save $4.50 off one gallon of milk". The catalina also says "thanks to General Mills" it's not even a Jewel offered deal. I hope this all makes sense. I'm still puzzled.

$4.50 coupon for milk

I got my milk for $2.99 and scanned the coupon and it gave me the full $4.50 off. Sometimes it is better to use the self checkout for these situations. I dont like to go to managers or customer service for things, so I prefer to checkout myself.

That's a bummer. I used mine

That's a bummer. I used mine eariler this week and got 4.50 off. I specifically used it even though I didn't need it right then because I wanted my total to be below 1.00. It acted like another 1.50 coupon for me.

Sorry to hear that...I stand by my claim that going to a teen/college student cashier works better. They just scan and don't look back...if it beeps, they key it in. You didn't say what "sort" of cashier you went to, but I've had much better luck going to the youngest one working!

It scans at $4.50

The coupon does scan with a $4.50 value. But I have heard numerous reports of cashiers doing this. I really don't know what can be done about it, especially if that's the stance corporate took (though I have known people that have gotten differing answers from corporate on the same day, depending on who you talk to.)

If they're going to play games, you can too -- buy some expensive milk. Buy Oberweis or one of the organic milks - whatever you want, if you want to get close to that $4.50 number. Or, try again later with a different cashier... it is bothersome because guess what value the store will get when they redeem that coupon? $4.50.

$4.50 milk

I did this too and bought the organic milk to make sure I got the full amount of the coupon. I also went to the lane with the young kids, who never questioned it. I ended up with $76 worth of food for $.83.
It was great fun!

$4.50 = expensive milk

Gosh you're good, Jill! I love the idea of expensive milk. Watch out organic milk here I come!!!

Expired coupons

I'm glad I read this coupon policy for Jewel. I thought they took expired coupons. Don't know where I got that from.

Thanks,
Candace

They used to

Up until April 2008, they did. I know some people on other couponing boards actually get somewhat vigilante-like when this subject is brought up -- they will insist that Jewel -should- take expireds, etc etc because they always used to. But, they don't anymore -- and I really don't recommend trying either. Some Jewels are particularly nasty if they catch you trying to pass an expired coupon. I understand people were upset when the policy changed, but it's the store's right. We just have to keep up and be educated shoppers.

It's worth noting too that with the exception of coupons that are perhaps less than a month past their expiration date, the store does not get reimbursed for expired coupons -- so if the store was losing too much money, it's likely this was the reason for the change.
