As we have new people joining the blog every week, I thought I'd post a few quick notes on how to make the most out of using this site.

Coupons in inserts typically don't expire for 3-6 months, but some can have expiration dates as far out as 9-12 months! So you never want to throw an insert away until every coupon in it is outdated -- and don't just pay attention to the things you think you'll buy, either. You might be throwing coupons away for things that will be free later (really! Just ask any of the readers of the blog!) So keep them ALL.
See this method illustrated on my Super-Couponing site!
(Note that if you shop at Dominick's, their current policy is to accept expired coupons up to one year back. You may want to hang onto those inserts even longer...)
(All You is not a requirement for using the site, but if you like coupons, you will probably really enjoy it. It's a cheap ($2.49 an issue) magazine that is absolutely filled with coupons each month -- typically 20-30 of them. Many websites are now tracking the All You coupons and matching them to deals, just as they do with the newspaper coupon inserts. You can subscribe to All You online and save about $10/year off the cover price. And depending on the values, if you use 2 or 3 coupons alone from each issue, you've recouped the cost of the magazine, and you're on your way to even bigger savings!)
It's also a good idea to hang onto your weekly store flyers (grocery, drugstore, and general merchandise.) I typically cover Chicagoland deals from Jewel, Dominick's, Meijer, Hilander, Walgreens, CVS, Target, and Kmart.
Any GROCERY store deals run through Wednesdays of the week they're posted. Any DRUGSTORE or general merchandise store deals run through Saturdays on the week they're posted.
Hope this helps! Enjoy the weekly deals and the rest of the site! If you like these deals, please consider coming to one of my Super-Couponing classes! Most are FREE in the Chicagoland area, and you will learn how to find deals like these on just about everything that you buy!

Hi- Very new and have a ?
Attended your Joliet class on Sat 8/1- FANTASTIC! THANK YOU. I went to Couponmom site and it didn't show the BEST deal of the week: Jewel has BOGO Fannie Mae Ice Cream and the SS also has a BOGO coupon...........I almost missed out on this -where else could I have gone to see this so as not to have missed out.
Thanx - coupondiana@yahoo.com
GG
The Grocery Game list will have it - that's one difference between the two lists. GG has all the unadvertised in-store sales as well, while Coupon Mom works directly from the weekly ad.
Grocery Deals
So I am clear on what I am reading.... You post the deals on Tuesdays (July 28 Deals) so that is only good that day and Wednesday? You write: "Any GROCERY store deals run through Wednesdays of the week they're posted." Am I reading/understanding this correctly? If not please explain..thanks.
Yes
Deals go up on Tuesdays and the ones at the grocery store are good Tuesday and Wednesday. If you are interested in knowing the reasoning behind this - statistically, Sunday-Wednesday are our best days to shop because of the overlapping sales cycles in the stores and the lower prices on those days. Unless something crazy/wonderful is going on, we usually avoid the grocery store Thursday-Saturday, as those are the highest priced days with less sales running. This is something I explain in great detail in my Super-Couponing classes, most of which are FREE in the Chicagoland area.
I don't usually blog on Sundays (spend that day with my family!) and I shop Monday to make sure all the deals are working, then write them up for Tuesday morning's list.
If you would like to shop sooner, cruise the Forum posts here -- many of the deals are posted a few days earlier, but the big summary of all our weekly deals is live Tuesday morning.
Printing an index of the coupons in each insert
I'm a newbie at this, and this is probably redundant for the pro's, but I've been printing an idex of the coupons by manufacturer in each insert using coupontom.com. This is the link that is on the top of my screen
http://supercouponing.coupontom.com/coupons/valid
I got there by scrolling to the bottom of the home page, clicking on "partner with tom" and then clicking on the example link. In the example, you can see all the unexpired coupons in an insert. (The week it comes out, they are all unexpired, thus all there.) I click on the insert I want, highlight the coupons in the insert, and then "print selection." (Otherwise it prints all the inserts.) I staple this to the front of my insert.
Hope I'm not copyright infringing here, but I love the index. The electronic "clip" wasn't always working for me, and I love to be able to scan the inserts in the store if I see something I remember.
Thanks Tom and Jill!!! You are making my grocery bill so much smaller!
Great idea!
I LOVE this idea! I usually don't really look at the inserts anymore - just staple and file - so this idea seems like it would be good so as not to miss any Q's that one might otherwise!
Thanks for the tip! :)
bad link
The index link above is corrupt (extra slash before the ":" NEVER retype links, always cut and paste). You can get there by clicking on "Coupon Lookup" on the right of this page, then "Current Inserts".
This link should work:

Cookie problem?
"Note: If you're having trouble logging in, try using this alternate address for access: www.magnetic-media.com/jill/ - some people have trouble logging in at the main address for reasons unknown."
I was having trouble logging in to your site using my laptop from one of your library classes! It would take my password, but still say I wasn't logged in.
I've got my security set rather tight, and one of FireFox options is to automatically reject all third party cookies. It looks like your site sets cookies under magnetic-media no matter which way you come in, so once I switched from www.jillcataldo.com to www.magnetic-media.com I was able to log in.
I STRONGLY recommend FireFox as a safe and secure alternative to IE for all web browsing. I require approval for all cookies, accept most for the session only (so that sites that require them work, but nothing gets permanently stored on my computer), reject third party cookies, and use Adblocker Plus to suppress virtually all ads.
Newbie - First Step
Attended your Super Couponing class in Huntley. I can't wait to get started. I've already informed my husband that I will no longer be shopping on Thursday and that we need to get the Trib this Sunday. While I'm looking forward to giving this a try, I don't want to wind up like your friend who couldn't buy food because she was buying all the cleaning products. What would you say is the first step for super-couponing? Should I wait until I've accumulated a larger selection of coupons? Should I concentrate on getting familiar with my store's coupon sites? Thank you for your guidance.
I am very new at this so this
I am very new at this so this may seem like a silly question, but i have to ask. Are the coupons printed off the internet manufacturer's coupons, and if so can they be stacked with manufacturer's coupons found in the paper?
No silly questions...
that's how you learn things--by asking questions! :) Not all coupons printed from the internet are manufacturer's coupons-- the exception would be if you printed, say, Target coupons from their website--those are STORE coupons. The majority of what you will print, though, probably are manufacturer's coupons (like from smartsource, printcoupons.com, any manufacturer's website, etc.). They will all say at the top of the coupon (just like the ones in the paper) "Manufacturer's coupon" or "Store coupon" (I think Target's say "Target coupon"). That's your best clue. The manufacturer's coupons from the internet CANNOT be stacked with manufacturer's coupons from the paper.
Question
I was just wondering.....
If you have a coupon that says buy 3 get $1.00 off can you use two other coupons on the other two items that you buy?
You buy 3 boxes of cereal. you have a coupon for buy 3 get $1.00 off. Can you use a .35 cent off and a .50 cent off on the other two boxes of cereal?
No
No. You would be violating the terms of the coupon (one coupon per purchase.) The Buy 3 save $1 functions as 3 coupons that take .33 off each item. The register will see any additional coupons on the same items and flag them invalid.
Another Q question......
Could you use a Buy One Get One (BOGO) Free and a $ off coupon for the free one?
In the 2/1 paper there was a BOGO on the Glade Scented Oil Candles. But from the crazy holiday scent promotion at Target in December, I have over a dozen $2 off coupons. I wasn't sure if I could do both. Plus there was $1 off coupons for the refills and I have buy 3 get the 4th free Qs.
I thought it might be possible because I thought there was a OUST deal like this a few months back, but I couldn't find the thread. Plus, on other threads I saw you mention you are paying tax on the free one for other items...but that was for when the store had BOGO offers and being able to use 2 Qs.
I have a spot reserved for your coupon class in April...but I wanted your advice before I attemped the deal. I don't want to commit coupon fraud. The candles and refills are on clearance at Jewel and with the Qs, the candles would be $1 each...which isn't free but I really like the Fresh Linen Scent (kind of sick of the holiday scents...lol).
You should be able to..
at Jewel.
Online Printable coupon sites
Hi Jill!
Do you happen to know how often the coupon sites like smartsource & coupons.com are updated with new coupons?
Thanks!
Yes
Every Sunday morning :)
All You Magazine
Hi Jill,
Is there a site, such as Coupon Tom, that tracks the All You coupons? If not, how do you track what's in each magazine or do you clip them?
Thanks!
P
All You Magazine
Hi There! I run the site CouponTom. The November coupons of All You magazine have been added to the database. It looks like I should be able to continue to add these coupons pretty easily. Ill have to start a subscription to get all the correct expiration dates though.
Anyways, let me know if there are any other coupons you would like added to the site or if there is anything I can do to make it more useful for you. I am always looking for ideas! Im happy to hear other people are finding the site useful.
-Tom
Make it better
What would be so fantastic, would be to have a coupon lookup, where you could then print the coupon, or load it to your store card right then and there, instead of having to look through the inserts. As a newbie, I am finding there are deals I want to take advantage of, but cant because I dont have the old inserts. :(
Never happen...
I don't want to burst your bubble, but that will likely never happen. Manufacturers issue different coupons to the inserts than they do online, and you can't print the insert coupons from the net. They're completely different sets of campaigns and coupons.
Definitely start keeping ALL your inserts though, and you'll be playing right along with the rest of us soon enough!
You're a celebrity :)
Tom, you're a celebrity in these circles! I love your site and I highly recommend it to people in my coupon classes each week -- so if you're seeing lots of new traffic... that could be a contributing factor :)
I'd be happy to help with the All You expiration dates & list if you don't want to get a subscription -- I'll email you about it off the board. Thanks for coming in! Each time I teach a class, I tell everyone that one of these days, I need to get around to emailing you and letting you know what a great site you've got. :)
All You
There isn't a specific site, but some of the Grocery Game lists do track them (their CVS list is especially good with AY coupons.)
However... have you seen a copy of All You? This is something I'll be showing and sharing in the Super-Couponing 2 class. Inside the back cover of the magazine is an ALPHABETICAL COUPON INDEX for every coupon contained in that issue - the value, and the page they're on!
Keep your All You's with the cover folded over and that page on the top - and it makes it very easy to scan/skim and see what coupons are inside that issue and exactly what they are. And no, I don't clip them from the magazine - I leave them in and use their index. It's great.
Another great thing? The index tells you how many coupons are inside the current issue are worth. The November's issue says "Total Savings: $29.70." So you also know the value of the coupons in the current issue too.
If you like All You and want to save more off the cover price, you can subscribe via this link. Plus, the magazine will show up at your door earlier than it hits the newsstands.
You're right - of course
Just pulled an issue of AY out of my "pile" and you're right, there's the list of coupons. Well this is certainly going to help! I even see some coupons in the Sept issue I missed out on using :-( but never again! Thanks again.
