Has there come a point where you are super couponing and think that maybe I do it too much? I find myself every moment I can going to the store. If I am not shopping, I am working on coupons. I have enough stuff at home to keep us going awhile but still want more. Is this normal? My husband thinks I am going too far with it?
Is he right?
do you really need 33 boxes of broth?
I have read several of the 'Obsessed' posts and there are many things I agree with and a few I don't agree with. I was shopping at MY local Jewel the other morning before I had to pick up the kindergartener's and in front of me in line was a truly 'obsessed-crazy-over the top - couponer.'
I will begin by thanking Jill for her hard work and mentoring us on her couponing expertise. I too am a couponer - but I buy for myself.
However, is it just me, or is it just ignorant to buy 33 boxes of Chicken Broth, 5 cases of Scotts PT's, and a million bags of rice back - to - back? Who does this? You can say all you want that you dontate to your church and blah, blah, blah...but I also agree with an earlier post that if that's the case - don't go at 9am on a Thursday and buy every last drop of everything and not leave anyting for those of us that are unemployed or are stuggeling to make ends meat! Not only did she buy everything - she was all giddy - throwing out statements like "Jill Cataldo is just great - look at all my stuff!" I wanted to tell her "Shut-up, you look like a goof." And not mention also, everyone was starring at her - and she was barley able to get help out. You could tell the Jewel employees were not thrilled with her at all!
So - perhaps I am just venting and this may be the wrong place to do it - but really, think about the others that are out there...oh, and by the way, she lives in New Lenox, but was shopping in Planifield because her store was "all sold out." Hum - wonder why?
Amen....
you said it!
Sad but so true..
it was absurd! I wish you could have seen this woman! I'm so thankful that someone out there understands. Thank-you!
It's All Fun But...
I have only been doing this since the spring, and have only hit a couple great deals. Ironically for this deal send $30/ get $15 and the last Dr .Pepper deal and Dove shampoo frenzzy my daughter and I have been sick and not able to leave the house for days. (I am a single mom and all of my fam lives alittle over an hour away, in addition I live a minimum of 20 min. from the closest Jewel and even further from all of the other groceres and big box stores so when I leave to shop I want it be be good) I love the chalange of getting the great deal but get beond bummed when I get to a store and thers nothing left to make any sort of a set up for my house. I would also love to provide shelters and food banks ect. with food like the others on this site but I wish they could wait just a few extra days to gather those items so that I and others could feel that joy and smiles from ear to ear on our way to the parking lot from the awsome deal we just got. But on the other hand we should not put each other down, god bless those who do provide that food. Our focus could be better spent on getting the stores to do a better providing the stock for these sales. Any how I just keep saying there will always be another sale and next time I will have my act togeather and not sick to be one of the first in the doors on the 1st day of the sale. :)
I agree...
..with you. It's all well and good to get this food to donate, but some of us are just getting by and getting some of these deals might make the difference - and keep us from going to the food pantry. I would be nice if those who want to give to the pantries would wait until the last night of the deal and take whatever is left.
For the next deal, see if your Jewel will set aside the items for you and call you when they are in, that way you don't have to make a long trip for nothing!
great post!
I'm glad to hear that the obsession will eventually die down! I've only been doing it for a month and have been running out to the stores a lot.
I can't wait for my stockpile to get up so I can relax, too. :)
SAME!!!
I saw coupons in my sleep for several months when I first started this. It was all-consuming/thrilling. I still get really excited over FREE stuff ;)
But I actually took the summer 'off' and worked very few deals, enjoyed the family, etc...and it helped ease some of the obsession. By then, my stockpile seemed comfortable enough to 'not actively build it' Now I don't do every cat deal, or worry about missing items/deals. They come around very frequently!!
Definitely normal
I think we all went through that when we got started, but once your stockpile builds up, you'll slow down too. I haven't even been inside a jewel since August or September (I know - GASP!!!). I just don't have any more room, and I know I could do the deals and donate - but I also know that there are a lot of people doing this and learning and it's frustrating to find empty shelves, so I'm just donating from my over-grown stockpile.
And a sidenote- I haven't even done anything with coupons in the past 3 months or so, it is out of control. The stack just keeps getting bigger, which just makes it more scary!! (Like writing the date on them and filing them is going to take SOOO much time!)
We all go through it
When you do this for awhile you realize how often these deals come around and dont feel the need to do every deal.
Been there and Done that...
I guess with any addiction or obsession you have to ponder one thought: is it interfering with your or your family's day-to-day operations or is taking too much time in your day.
We all have been preoccupied with the abundance of bargains but that seems to be prevalent for everyone at first particularly if you are new at this and trying different deals and scenarios...it does settle down over time if you make wise buying decisions...or if you purchases/inventory are pushing you out of your house :)
A stage
For me, that was a stage. I'm over it now. Even have sat a few out. For this one I am only getting what I have coupons for. I also got the hint from my family as my husband calls my coupons my best friends. I was pretty obsessed though for a good 8 months though:)
(Sorry I haven't emailed you back! All in time.)
yep...
I think you can call yourself a third degree blackbelt when you no longer worry about this stuff. Sure, I still look for bargains everywhere and use coupons all the time, but as far as this deal goes, I haven't clipped a single coupon yet.
In the beginning, I would think "how many deals can I do?" Now I think "how few deals can I do?" My goal is to do just one for my household. That's all I need.
It's a marathon, not a sprint.
Completely agree....
It's good to get what you need, have some left to donate, and then live your life for ALL the reasons already mentioned. Your initial zest will taper when life begins to interfere!
Deals
Exactly! I'm stocking up now HARD to get me through the nasty cold/sleety/snowy days when it's dark in the am and pm and I haven't the slightest energy to hit the stores. Even stocking up on the Over the Moon and putting it in the freezer (well, one of them). Gotten my produce order in from the farm, so that's one less thing to worry about. And with this week's cats on paper products, etc., I can't see jumping for a free Glade product in December. I, also, stayed out of Jewel for a couple of weeks. When I walked back in, the asst mgr saw me and said "Where've you been?" My life is sad.
Freezing milk?
I didn't know you could do that. I just figured that expanding, etc. would ruin the milk. How does it taste after it has thawed?
Memories
It tastes just like milk when it thaws. Think back to all the times in grade school when you had ice in your milk, or it was completely frozen.
True..
I guess I never thought of it that way!
