Ok, got stung by the cashier entering a cat as grocery. My cat wouldn't scan so I asked her for the cats back ( I couldn't remember how it should be entered and the clock was ticking to pick up the kids). Well, too late. "No problem", she said as next thing you know $15.00 in cats get entered into the register as grocery. Now I am stuck explaining why that could be a deal breaker for the 15/30. THank goodness she got the concept and pulled all my cats and from the drawer. Cats were voided (all except one I found out later) We completed the transaction, then tragedy. My $61.28 non pref. triggers just 15.00 in cats. The cashier is so excited "see it all worked out" and I want to cry because my first stacked deal failed. I leave the store knowing I can't complain because there is no explaining this to customer service "excuse me, but cheap wasn't cheap enough, so could you re-ring this while my kids wonder if their mother has abandoned them"? (I always think of the movie SOPHIE'S CHOICE when I have to decide to go to customer service or make sure I am not late for the kids) I got in my car and took a moment to look over my receipt, and sullenly count my cats..5..10..15..20..25..30!
She handed me back all my coupons and the cats with my receipt. I feel the need to take them back, but that would only point out that she handed them to me by mistake. Guess I have to do something good with them to keep the good karma flowing. Plus side to all this, next time mycat doesn't scan I'll know what to do-UPC CODE/MANUFACTURER/ENTER--don't think I will ever forget those words of wisdom next time.
Do the greater good
Sounds like you feel like you need to take them back, but I might be going against the grain in saying consider keeping them. Most likely you just missed the threshold to get them by a dollar or two (we have all done that). If you take them back, what really happens with them? I say take that Karma you mentioned and let it lead to a greater good. Make a bigger food donation, if you feel guilty keeping them- give them to someone in need. I'm not sure what the store would actually do if you return them, but there is a good chance that Jewel would just tear them up. Just my opinion, so be nice to me. Thanks!
Ethical dilemmas are KILLING ME!
First last week, my $1.50 Q didn't scan at Wags so the cashier manually entered it... for $15.00 off! Then last night at Target I tried to buy 3 Wii games that were B2G1, and only 1 of them rang up--saving me $50! Lucky for these people I am good at math so I caught their errors right away and made it right. Besides the obvious that it's the right thing to do, I've learned to get so much for free or cheap just by playing by the rules, why be anything less than honest? But dangit, universe, why must you tempt me like this :)
When we game these deals we are taking the risk on ourselves. There's a lot that can go wrong and--true--not all of it is within our control (ie, not all failures are our fault). But I feel that the price of scoring so much for free/cheap is the occasional crash and burn. Fortunately I win FAR more than I lose. Worst case scenario, I end up paying full retail price for something--and that's how I shopped most of the time anyway up until 3 months ago!
Similar siuation
at Doms yesterday. I had 6water qs b2s$1, so I got 12. I also bought cupcakes for the dr. office (you know your dr/nurses well when you bring them cupcakes on your bday...lol). I got out to the truck thinking, man this was way to cheap with the cupcakes. So, when I get to the dr. office and I am waiting to go in, I am looking at my reciept. The cashier scanned my q 12 times...one for each of my waters. Mind you there only 1.09 so I was charged for 9cents a gallon. I called the store, asked to talk to the mgr and let him know that I will be in after my appt to give some money back. His response....keep the deal, it was our fault. Ok, being in retail management, I saw where he was coming from, but being an honest person this was hard for me to do. So, I went and gave them money back. I knew this was the right thing to do.
If you have to ask...
I think that you know already what the right thing to do is. If it didn't bother you, you would have put them in your pocket, smiled, and never thought twice.
But, it is ultimatley up to you.
